Yoga is the perfect tool for anyone wishing to make permanent changes in their life whether it be losing weight, leaving a destructive relationship or overcoming the toxic affects of growing up in a dysfunctional family. Yoga is the ideal method for achieving personal transformation. As far as permanent weight loss is concerned, the yoga practice does not specifically emphasize burning calories, though you will burn calories while practicing yoga. If you have a steady practice, this can be a beneficial side affect although it is not the main focus of the practice. Yoga focuses on bringing the body and mind into a state of harmony so that self knowledge is possible.The reason most weight loss programs ultimately fail is because they do not address the roots of the problem. In most cases when someone gains weight this is a result of over eating. But what causes us to over eat? Most people are not born as over eaters. The habit of over eating usually develops as a result of some emotional imbalance that slowly develops over time. As a result we develop unhealthy eating habits including over eating.Simply going on a diet or joining a health club is not going to address that question. You may lose significant weight by taking such actions but inevitably the weight will return unless you begin to address the root causes of over eating (the emotional imbalance that caused the problem in the first place.) Once we understand what causes our problem, we can then choose to change our behavior. Change then becomes a conscious choice and we become the masters of our own fate rather than always feeling like the victim.Yoga teaches us to live mindfully and to use conscious intention to achieve our goals. Therefore it is the perfect vehicle for personal growth of any kind including changing our behavior in any situation. Through the yoga practice we learn to love and respect our bodies and to nurture our souls in very healthy ways. The result is personal transformation and a quality of life second to none.
